Project Details
Located within the Harold Road Conservation Area, this is a characterful period property recognised as a ‘positive unlisted building’ in the local conservation area appraisal. Its architectural character makes an important contribution to the surrounding streetscape, so the project called for a careful approach: preserving the external appearance of the house while creating a thoroughly modern home within.
With changes to the exterior restricted, the transformation focused primarily on the interior. Both the ground and first floors were stripped back and comprehensively rebuilt, giving us the opportunity to rethink the layout, improve the flow between spaces and introduce a more contemporary feel throughout.
Rather than removing every trace of the original house, selected features were retained and incorporated into the new design, including the distinctive spiral staircase. These existing elements sit alongside more contemporary additions, such as space-saving pocket doors and frosted glass panels, which allow natural light to travel further through the interior while maintaining privacy where needed.
The finishes and joinery were carefully considered throughout, with high-quality materials and bespoke built-in storage used to make the most of the available space without adding unnecessary visual clutter.
A new kitchen forms an important part of the redesigned ground floor. Generous granite worktops provide plenty of preparation and workspace, while integrated storage keeps the room practical and uncluttered.
The result is a home that feels substantially different on the inside while remaining respectful of its original character and its setting within the conservation area — retaining the features worth keeping while adapting the house for contemporary living.
